About the Exhibition
Exquisitely detailed pottery works had developed in Edo era, spread throughout around the world.
Well-accomplished works with Asian sense of sensibility surprised and fascinated the Westerners at that time.
Nowadays, the detailed pottery works ーlater acknowledged as traditional craft worksー have less opportunity to be presented due to the decrease of people who are taking over the craftsmanship. Aiba introduces his pottery works which have contrasting perspectives, well harmonized with traditional technique and the very original, sensible idea by using the motif inspired by Mononoke(Japanese ghosts), allegories, and such.
KaNAM gallery is pleased to present Ruiji Aiba's solo exhibition titled "reverberation" ー murmur of the voices, whispers between animals and ghosts, are left upon Aiba's works, appearing as "reverberation". The works featuring human, animal, ghosts which appear on old allegories from various culture, will be on display. The very individualistic characters excite our instinctive curiosity. In Aiba's work, the very traditional technique developed in Seto area in Japan to put forced patina on the surface of the pottery works bring out the hidden profoundness. Coexistence of the craftsmanship and the artistic expression will be perceived.
