Yuko Nasaka: Rotation

Yuko Nasaka (1938~)’s motif is rotation. In a sense, it is a complete movement (action) and its trajectory leaves traces of time on the canvas in a beautiful form. When we think of painting by action, we imagine something physical and rough like Pollock, but her action is more automatic and refined. Why the interest in rotation? It comes from Nasaka’s memories of growing up watching the rotating gas meters that her family made in their factory.

Nasaka seems to be interested in anything that rotates, and when she visited our museum, she was also very interested in the French artist Marcel Duchamp’s video work ‘Anémic Cinema’, which was on display. This will be exhibited alongside Nasaka’s work.
The visual effect of rotation is also an important element of this work, and we hope that visitors will experience the chemical reaction when it is exhibited alongside Nasaka’s work.
