Art-loving children from Karuizawa gathered at a workshop related to the Luc Vieren exhibition on Sunday, December 12th.
One of the distinctive features of Luc's work is the combination of images cut out from magazines and other sources with text. This time, Luc had the children cut out the mirrored part of a copy of an image of a mirror he had prepared, and imagine what was inside it. "What you put in the mirror is something that represents yourself, or how you're feeling today. It could be something like a self-portrait. It could also be your home, or the home you want to live in in the future. Tell us one by one what you'd put in it." Encouraged by Luc, the children expanded on their images of their feelings and favorite things.
Cut out the parts you like from a number of magazines and image copies. Once you have prepared what to paste, you can think about how to put them together. This time it was a little difficult because of the mirror frame. Once the collage part is complete, have the students find the letters of their name in a newspaper. Cut it out and paste it to complete the project.
The children were not intimidated by the Belgian artists and showed flexibility and creativity that overcame the language and cultural barriers. Luc was surprised by their energy and skill.
