Karuizawa New Art Museum has been introducing excellent postwar Japanese contemporary art. Yukihisa Isobe, an artist who lived in the same era as the Gutai Art Association, which has been the focus of our exhibitions, attracted attention with his relief-like works that repeated "patterns" made from a mixture of cement and plaster. The many "patterns" lined up are all slightly different in shape, and there are a variety of types, from simple ones made of white fabric to ones that are colorfully colored like national flags, and each one has its own unique personality. This time, we will be introducing the work "Work 62 (1962)", which features a pattern of patches, specially for this workshop, and creating mini-patterns. By attaching a safety pin to the back, it can be used as an accessory, and can be taken home, making it enjoyable for both children and adults. In addition to getting to know the KNAM collection, we will also draw out a stronger interest and curiosity in Japanese avant-garde art.
