Overview
White Stone Gallery Karuizawa is pleased to present the "Awai" exhibition featuring works from our collection.
"Awai" is a Japanese concept that describes the elegant space that is created when different things come together.
This exhibition explores the lingering effects of color and the "gap" (space) through a group of works based on white and blue.
White and blue are familiar colors that evoke images of nature, such as the sky, the sea, and light. These open yet delicate tones create an emotional stillness, and the brushstrokes, textures of the materials, and depth of color resonate subtly with each other, bringing the viewer a moment of quiet lingering reflection.
The exhibition will feature approximately 20 paintings, including works by Maekawa Tsuyoshi that utilize the texture of fabric to give the picture plane a three-dimensional and dynamic feel, works by Inokuma Katsuyoshi that use deep blue to create a sense of peace and depth, works by Mizutetsuo in which dull colors and delicate line drawings resonate with each other, and works by Takamatsu Jiro in which geometric lines and white space create a tranquil space on the picture plane.
Please enjoy this time of "in-between" through the works of emotionally rich contemporary Japanese artists.
Exhibiting artists (in no particular order): Mizu Tetsuo, Inokuma Katsuyoshi, Maekawa Tsuyoshi, Mashima Hidenori, Sakamoto Tokuro, Takamatsu Jiro
