Overview
We are pleased to announce the holding of the "Mizu Tetsuo" exhibition from our gallery collection.
Mizu Tetsuo was born in Tokyo in 1944 and passed away on January 2025, 1.
Mizu incorporated international signal flags, essential for communication between ships, into the world of painting, establishing his own unique aesthetic and poetic sentiment. He received high acclaim in Europe from the 1980s to the 1990s, and held exhibitions throughout the country. Notable exhibitions include the "Picasso, Dalí, Chagall, Mizu" exhibition (Barcelona, 1989) and the "Dalí Mizu" exhibition (Beaune, 1990).
He also enjoyed international success, including being commissioned to create stained glass windows for Santa Anna Church.
This exhibition focuses on Mizu Tetsuo's signature "Flag" series, showcasing a unique world woven with abstract lyricism and the motif of ship's flags. The matte, serene surface of the works evokes the inherent connotations of Japanese culture, evoking the Japanese hobbies of ukiyo-e and hanafuda cards. The curves and colors are inspired by scenes of flags from around the world swaying in the wind. Furthermore, a melancholy that evokes the influence of his mentors, Modigliani and Takehisa Yumeji, also lies at the core of Mizu's expression.
This exhibition will focus on works created in his later years. Please take the time to experience his sensitive and emotional style.

Artist Information
Mizu Tetsuo
He rose to prominence in the 1980s with his Flag series, in which he designed titles by combining the international signal flags used for communication between ships at sea. He lived for many years in Italy, France, and Spain, exhibiting in various locations. In 1987, he was invited to exhibit at a competition in Anzio, near Rome, where he won a special prize and was commissioned to create stained glass for the Santa Anna Church. His works, such as those shown at the "Picasso, Dalí, Chagall, Mís" exhibition (Barcelona, 1989) and the "Dalí Mís" exhibition (Beaune, France, 1990), demonstrate the high acclaim he enjoyed in the European art world. His matte, voluminous textures, separated by extremely fine lines, are contemporary abstractions, but some have pointed out their resemblance to ukiyo-e. He has also exhibited at numerous art fairs, including Art Basel (Switzerland), FIAC (Paris), and Art Rio (Brazil).
