Overview
Jeff Ross, an artist who freely combines music, art, and street culture, will be appearing at Whitestone Karuizawa again. His first solo exhibition last year received a much bigger response than expected, and the long-awaited second part, "LOOP PLUS+", will be held from January 2025th to March 1nd, 26. His work has always been ahead of its time, and has fascinated many people with its unconventional art. What new perspective will Ross, who is known for his artwork for the legendary band Nirvana, take on art this time? You can feel the answer directly at the exhibition venue.
Jeff Ross worked on the artwork for Nirvana's T-shirts and album covers from the late 80s to the 90s, and his work crosses the boundaries between music and art, earning him the love of fans around the world. He was deeply involved with the Seattle indie label "SUB POP" and was at the forefront of the era, and his influence still remains strong in the art scene. Since the 90s, he has traveled to France, Spain, Serbia, and in recent years to various Asian countries, and currently lives in Japan. New inspirations incorporating different cultures give his art even more depth. As an artist with a unique perspective and free style of expression, he is always creating new expressions with his unconventional free perspective and rebellious energy.
This time, "LOOP PLUS+" will exhibit new drawings from the Bristol series, which was well received at his previous solo exhibition, as well as newly drawn skateboard works. Several valuable pieces of skateboard art that Jeff created with the Thai skateboard brand "Preduce" in the 90s that he had saved will also be on display as non-sale items. These will be a rare opportunity to experience the history and energy of street culture.
In addition, the exhibition will feature drawings and collages using hanging scrolls he found at an antique market in Ueno and magazines he found at second-hand bookstores in Asia, as well as works using "found objects" he collected while traveling around the world. These works are filled with his homage to different cultures, and will unfold art reconstructed from a new perspective.
This exhibition vividly depicts the evolution of his work from subcultural works to high art, and allows visitors to see his evolution as art born from music and street culture grows into a more universal art form, marking an important step in his new challenge.
"LOOP PLUS+" is an exhibition that gives a sense of how art and culture are connected and continue to evolve. This exhibition is a wonderful fusion of music, art, street culture, skateboarding, and found objects, and visitors are invited to experience the new worldview depicted by Jeff Ross and his evolution and challenges. You will be able to feel that powerful energy at White Stone Karuizawa.
We are looking forward to your visit.
