The Karuizawa New Art Museum 1st floor gallery (Whitestone, Karuizawa) will be hosting "Colors of the Earth", Mutsumi Hagiwara's first solo exhibition at Whitestone Gallery.

Hagiwara Mutsumi expresses the ever-changing and fleeting phenomena of nature using the eternal material "glass." He records the emotions he felt at the time and the natural scenery in "words" and "photographs," preserving the artist's memories through three different media.
This exhibition will feature approximately 20 glass works, including new works, centered around "Shadow of the Earth," one of the artist's representative series born from his encounter with natural phenomena in the sky.

"Earth's shadow" is the name of a real natural phenomenon in the sky. It is a phenomenon in which the Earth blocks sunlight and casts a blue band in the sky, which can be seen on the opposite side of the Sun at sunrise and sunset.

The sensations and emotions of invisible memories become vague and faded as time passes. The moving memories of my daily life accumulate like little talismans, and eventually become a great source of nourishment that supports me from the ground up.

When I come across an inspiring sight in my daily life, or when I am overwhelmed by nature while traveling, I record that moment in photographs and words, and then translate the memory into glass. Although I cannot touch the memory itself directly, by reproducing the colors of that moment in glass, I can make the memory exist semi-permanently.
If you can recall past emotions and memories, it will be the greatest encouragement for you, who are living in the present, to move forward into the future. (...)
