Overview
As part of the special exhibition series "Asian Artists Currently Recognized Around the World," which focuses on noteworthy artists from a unique perspective, Karuizawa New Art Museum continues to present Hokkaido-based artist Kazuharu Hanada (1946-2017).
Kazuharu Hanada was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1946. He entered Tokyo University of the Arts in 65 and studied oil painting under Ryohei Koiso (1903-1988). After completing his graduate studies at the same university in 71, he returned to Sapporo in 74 and continued to create works in Hokkaido until his death in 2017. Hanada had been experimenting with geometric painting since his student days, and after returning to his hometown, he began to create paintings that consisted of brightly colored planes in squares. He eventually created works that abstracted the essence of the nature of Hokkaido and his own daily life into simple forms. In his later years, his work shifted to depictions that were reminiscent of stories, leaving behind humorous and lyrical works.
As a sequel to "The World of Kazuji Hanada" exhibition (November 2020, 11 - March 14, 2021), we will be showcasing more in-depth works by Hanada, including previously unreleased pieces that could not be fully introduced last time.
How the artist created his works after seeing actual landscapes, his thoughts and ideas on the production, the process, and various motifs that interested him. This exhibition will display these together with drawings and photographs.
