The World of Kazuharu Hanada "Colors and Forms, Humor and Poesy"

Overview

Karuizawa New Art Museum will be holding an exhibition entitled "The World of Hanada Kazuji: Color and Form, Humor and Poetry" as part of its special exhibition series "Asian Artists Currently Recognized Around the World," which focuses on noteworthy artists from a unique perspective.

Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1946, Kazuharu Hanada (1946-2017) entered Tokyo University of the Arts in 65 and studied oil painting under Ryohei Koiso (1903-1988). After completing his graduate studies at the same university in 71, he returned to Sapporo in 74 and continued to create works in Hokkaido until his death in 2017. Hanada had been experimenting with geometric painting since his student days, and after returning to his hometown, he began to create paintings that consisted of brightly colored planes in squares, eventually creating works that abstracted the essence of Hokkaido's nature and his own daily life into simple forms.

While influenced by postwar trends such as Abstract Expressionism and Hard Edge, Hanada also had a deep interest in Rinpa and Kyoto art circle painter Fukuda Heihachiro (1892-1974). His work is backed by a poetic sensibility that captures familiar phenomena in a lyrical way, and by crystal-clear visual effects, and is filled with a rare refreshing originality among the many abstract paintings produced in Japan after the war.

This exhibition traces the trajectory of his artistic expression through approximately 100 works spanning from his early period to his later years, as well as related materials, collected with the cooperation of his family.
