Toko Shinoda (1913-2021) was born in Manchuria and first picked up a brush at the age of 5. As she continued to practice calligraphy, her father gave her the pen name "Toukou."
Her real name was Masuko, but she continued her writing career using the pen name Tokoro for the rest of her life.
The name comes from a seven-character couplet in the ancient Chinese book "Shige," which goes, "Peaches are red, plums are white, roses are purple. The spring breezes blow in unison, but the colors of the flowers are all different." It was given to the red peaches that are born in the spring.
Momojiang says, "I feel humbled that my name is alongside Li Bai's," but Li Bai has a line in his poem, "The peach is red, the flowing water leaves me speechless," which is also related to the redness of the peach.
