A windy forest of birches and moss
Architect Kengo Kuma × Contemporary artist
Jean-Michel Othoniel

The chapel was completed in July 2015 on the grounds of the Karuizawa New Art Museum. Standing in front of the chapel is the "Gate of the Heart (Kokoro no mon)," an object created by Jean-Michel Othoniel in the previous year, which consists of two hearts standing as if supporting each other. It is meant to express the hope that by passing through it, the bond between two people will become stronger. Kengo Kuma, who challenged himself to see how far he could go beyond the fate of a building, which is to separate the inside from the outside, created an "open and tolerant place." The Glass walls in all directions connects the birch and moss that continue from the outside into the building, creating a stunning sense of unity.
The all-glass walls can be slid open, and the roof and chairs that can seat 42 people are also made of glass. It can actually be used as a wedding venue, with several weddings being held there each year.
From autumn 2020, the general public will be able toChapelIt is now possible to visit the facility.
