Shuji Mukai(1940-)

SHUJI_MUKAI

Active during the 2nd wave of Gutai artists, Mukai held his first individual exhibition at the Gutai Pinacotheca as a next generation artist.
He has a body of work comprised of paintings and spaces decorated with infinite arrangements of symbols such as circles, triangles and crosses. These works exude an intense energy that is unhindered by their black and white medium. For the current exhibition visitors can experience works reminiscent of Mukai’s “Room of Symbols” (The 8th Annual Gutai Exhibition, 1958) and his installations at the Guggenheim Museum (2013).
