About the Exhibition

Whitestone Gallery Karuizawa is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Taro Yakumo “The World of Taro Yakumo”.

Yakumo Taro has presented art works treated railways as his theme throughout the country. He is known as Kakitetsu (enthusiastic painter of railways). In the previous solo exhibition “Karuizawa Colors” held at the Karuizawa New Art Museum, he presented the works which dedicated to the local raiilway which is deeply connected in the history of Karuizawa and drew a lot of reaction.

Passong through a year, the works of Taro Yakumo increased its humor and charm including three dimensional works utilized model railroad and works which has apprently nothing to do with the railway but actually rooted in it. Besides, In this exhibition, related documents and event will be appeared in collaboration with Shinano Railway Company. This exhibition will be a prime ocasione to transmitte the charm of art to the fan of railway as well as the charm of railway to the fan of art. Profile

Lives and works in Tokyo. His fater is art dealer and his mother is engraving artist. Yakumo started to learn oil painting in his childhood and won many awards in painting competitions. Through his experience of travelling to various countries, yakumo encountered contemporary art which led him to open his own art gallery later, then, to become an artist himself. His passion for raiway from his childhood made him pursue the connection between « railway » and « art ». He suggested the new category Kakitetsu based on his concept « railway is art » and developed his way of creation through various expression. Besides exhibitions in department stores and galleries in Japan, his works are displayed in USA and Asia. This exhibiion is the second show at the Karuizawa New Art Museum since « Karuizawa Colors » in September 2018.
