About the Exhibition

My solo exhibition at KaNAM gallery consists of oil paintings of “waterscapes”. These waterscapes are based on my fieldwork using a camera with macro lens in the swamps and wetlands around Lake Biwa. I experience so many things during walking around the lake, and everything including my body intertwines and resonates incidentally.
“Waterscape” series is a collection of oil paintings which depict the nature as it is. I have been studying traditional oil paintings. As a result of the study, these works are painted by an original technique which combines the grisaille technique and the lazur (glaze) technique. The inner structure of layers of the works are tough, and it produces a unique texture and colours. Art is an exact technique to express the fertility which potentially exists in the world. Nature is the beginning of meanings, and all the significant things are gifted from nature to humans. I am producing this “waterscape” series as a practice of new ‘ecological aesthetics’ which fits this global environment. “Waterscape” is an attempt to express the peculiarity of mentality of Japanese culture by fully functioning the characteristics of oil paintings, and this attempt is the first time throughout art history.
