About the Exhibition

By using a technique of pouring, Imai serendipitously draws vivid creatures.
The figures in his work change as spontaneous lines move around on the canvas.
Pouring is a technique of dropping paint from the tip of the brush onto canvas or paper placed on the ground. Imai sees the nature of life in the technique of pouring.
Things are hard to control, and sometimes go against our intention.
Imai enjoys the serendipity found in his motifs of humans, animals, and other creatures.
With his positive attitude, Imai embraces the unexpected spots and lines appearing in his work giving viewers a sense of wonder and attraction.

Message

My visit to Karuizawa this March for a meeting about this exhibition was the first time in 25 years.
It was a great sunny day, but the coldness of the air and its freshness left a strong impression. Maybe it is due to the snow from the day before. I did not have any particular experience then, yet I think there is something special about Karuizawa, which is hard to explain. It is something like the attraction you feel by someone you meet for the first time without exchanging any words. There are various kinds of attraction in this world, and I believe in the importance of such a strong attraction that you cannot explain nor resist. I hope you feel a similar gravity from my work at this exhibition. I am excited to have this show at Karuizawa, this time in summer.
